From the artist, John Szlasa
During my simultaneous pursuit of depiction, and self- reflection, I have been experimenting with a layered collage of early twentieth century imagery, abstraction, graphic elements, type, etc., which I use to embed, hide, or even mock these appropriated images which I see as relics of the “old world”. The images or objects evoke a period I can only envision through film, photography, and stories. I see these figures and scenes as a dedication to a faded experience, disseminated and degraded into jokes and stereotypes, or sentiment. As an artist I believe in hard work, community, exploration, creative encouragement, diversity, and the D. I. Y. aesthetic. I am inspired by the art, music and attitudes of my close contemporaries, as well as many different artists from the present and past. I’m influenced by everything from great teachers and truck drivers, to skateboarders and architects. Thanks for checking out my work, my hope is that it inspires more creation, conversation, and collaboration.
