Brooklyn Fire Proof is pleased to present the final installment of curator Marc Gartman’s series of exhibitions featuring successful contemporary independent musicians who are also visual artists. Previous series included the work of, among others, Bill Callahan (Smog), Ida Pearle (Ida), Devendra Banhart, Jon Langford (The Mekons), Tara Jane O’Niel, and David Pajo (Papa M, Slint).
DC Berman has been working under the Silver Jews moniker since 1993. Berman’s most recent record ‘Tanglewood Numbers’ was released on Drag City in October 2005 to critical acclaim. Using the simplest of means: ballpoint pen, scrap paper and stick figures, his drawings are known for their devious wit and intelligent narrative. Also an accomplished writer: in 1999, Open City Press released Actual Air, a book of Berman’s poetry.
John Darnielle AKA The Mountain Goats most recent CD ‘The Sunset Tree’ was released this year. Despite the fact that he has only been recording music since the early 1990’s his output of songs rival the cannon of many of the great American songwriters from the 70s. His confessional writing was recently compared to the music and lyrics of Bob Dylan. Darnielle presents a series of books handmade with stickers, ballpoint pen and construction paper that abstractly chronicle the adventures of Chavo Guerrero, the Champion of the World.
Pall Jenkins is best known for his work fronting The Black Heart Procession and Three Mile Pilot and his drawings have graced many of their record covers. After a considerable break BHP are back in the studio working on a new record for an early 2006 release. Jenkins presents a series of enlarged Polaroid prints taken during the filming of The Tropics of Love, a murder mystery film inspired by their 2002 full-length Amore Del Tropico.
Jason Molina from Magnolia Electric Co. (and previously Songs: Ohia) released a new EP in October and a full length earlier this year on Secretly Canadian Records. Here he will debut “Ghost Songs,” a work consisting of 400 collages, prints, photos, drawings, lyrics and found objects inside of 12 small boxes. Despite having one of the busiest touring schedules of any working band we are honored to have Jason play at the opening reception for this show.
Archer Prewitt, well known for his solo projects as well as his work with The Sea and Cake, released the full-length ‘Wilderness’ earlier this year on Thrill Jockey. Prewitt actively works both as an artist and as a musician. Since the early 1990s, Prewitt has been drawing ‘Sof’ Boy’ comics, which have garnered much critical attention. Here he presents original artwork from the third volume of ‘Sof’ Boy.’
IN THE PROJECT ROOM: Nicedisc
November 18 – December 18th, 2005
Stroboscopic Column, a new installation by Nicedisc, extends the duo’s investigations of perceptual phenomena presented on their debut DVD Untitled into a fully immersive audiovisual environment. Requiring viewers to prostrate themselves inside the column beneath a visual plane of shifting light and shadow patterns, Stroboscopic Column attempts to probe the nature of our perceptual apparatus through the creation of a simultaneously hyperactive and hypnotic aural and visual environment.
Nicedisc’s work to date can be considered an exploration of synesthesia that begins from the level of material production and moves to interrogate the psychological and perceptual phenomena of, and relationships between vision and sound. Their investigations have lead them through several media, including their initial experiments with 16mm film, live performance video using custom software (culminating in their debut Untitled DVD in 2004), and most recently with analog audio-visual generators. They have toured extensively through the United States and United Kingdom. As a natural extension of their multimedia efforts, their interest has in the past year extended beyond the screen and into the viewing environment itself.
