Kids’ Canvas is a space for kids in Bushwick Brooklyn, created by Silvia Tripoli. It is designed to indulge children’s need to play, foster creativity and to give a green light to fun for kids while allowing parents respite during the day. Silvia and her husband, the artist Tyrome Tripoli, converted his former studio into a colorful, welcoming, thought-provoking space. Many of Tyrome’s plastic constructions remain hanging from the ceiling or bursting forth from the walls. The space also has a slide and tunnel to encourage movement, and a reading nook under a canopy for quieter moments.

CINEBESTIALITY SUMMER SERIES KICKOFF

Presenting a hot 25th anniversary summer screening of CRIMEWAVE, Sam Raimi’s 1985 followup to EVIL DEAD. Written by his former roommates the Coen Brothers (cameo-ing in the event photo), CRIMEWAVE is an antic blood pudding of Three Stooges gags, pitch-black comedy, film noir and vaudevillian slapstick.

CRIMEWAVE is both Raimi and the Coens’ first trip into the world of big-time boffo filmmaking, and when the film was fiddled with by its backers, both halves shunned the end product. Hence CRIMEWAVE is not available on US DVD. Irregardless, it’s a must-see for fans of either ouvre; there’s not a frame of daylight between the overlapping visions, and several set pieces – especially revolving around Bruce Campbell’s character of Reynaldo “The Heel” – are delicious, juicy cinema carne.

The movie screens with a classic short by Rene Laloux (FANTASTIC PLANET) and a brand-spanking new one: Mallory Lance’s action-packed SECRET OPS. Come sit in BFP’s cozy air-conditioned theatre and drink beer with us on a hot Wednesday night.

As a young and torpid director played by Jake Hoffman tries his hand at modernizing Hamlet with his dysfunctional cast, things get further complicated when his hapless production is over run by a secret vampire legend. Check out the trailer here and see the awesome, creepy graveyard and the vampy undead feast in studio A as it goes ghastly.

If You Build it They Will Come

A garden without bugs is only half a garden.

As you may remember form our bee post we were initially concerned about building a garden on a seemingly lifeless rooftop. Short of installing honeybee hives or purchasing ladybugs via the internet cultivating insect populations in your garden in a little trickier then putting seed in the ground. Fortunately, as you trust in the seed to sprout, you can trust bugs to find you almost anywhere if you provide them a good home. (As anyone who has witness spontaneous aphid infestation on their windowsill tomatoes can attest to)

So where do they come from anyway? There were most likely already all kinds of eggs in our organic soil mix, we definitely saw some earthworms when assembling the planters. These were the foundations of our little ecosystem and as the plants grow up and the bugs fly in it becomes more complex every day.

SAT JUNE 12 6pm-midnight in the alley!

This Saturday head to the great outdoors in Brooklyn for a special sunset and early evening get-down under the stars. MISTER SATURDAY NIGHT will be setting up shop in the alley, serving up cold beverages and chowing down with the good folks from Taccolada. The party starts at 6pm and runs to midnight, so bring an appetite and a thirst, and we’ll take care of you for the duration.

Eamon Harkin and Justin Carter are rocking the party as only they can, and their special guest Rick Wade, a man, who alongside Kenny Dixon Jr and Theo Parish pioneered the beautiful sounds of deep Detroit House, will make a rare Brooklyn appearance.

Nada Surf shot their music video for “Electrocution” here in Brooklyn Fire Proof’s Studio A rocking through all four seasons in 3 minutes.

Director li Stonberg uses rear projection to make a world with aptly electric nature elements and a time-lapse sky in the background to shift colors and seasons. With a flower blooming and a burning orange tree swaying in the breeze one moment followed minutes later by chilly purples and snow “Electrocution” feels timely for our recent heat wave in Brooklyn.
